The lakes and river have a rich selection of bird species, whopper (Cygnus Cygnus) and bewick’s (c.columbianus) swans, herons (ardea cinerea), grebes (podiceps cristatus), kingfishers (alcedo atthis) and several of geese, ducks and waders. The drier lands and woods have the species generally associated with inland areas. Amongst the more unusual species, tree creepers (certhis familiaris) are found at Castlekelly. The common animals of the countryside are to be found including badgers, and there are otters along the Suck. Locally present species are mentioned in the text beside each map. This is necessarily a very incomplete account of the flora and fauna. For full information you would need to consult a specialist book.
